Originally published as the Hokusai manga sōhitsu no bu (北斎漫画 草筆之部, translating into “Hokusai manga. Section of quick sketches”), the colour-printed version of the Manjiō sōhitsu gafu published in 1843. This reimpression of Volume 1 of the Hokusai Gaen was issued in 2008 by publisher Unsōdō in Kyoto as part of the five volume set “A collection of Hokusai drawing manuals” (北斎絵手本集成, which is pronounced as Hokusai etehon shūsei).
